Woodmancote, a thinly populated parish, east of Henfield, contains and surrounds the hamlet of Blackstone. Near Woodmancote Place there is a large church, St. Peter's. It stands near the Henfield - Brighton A281 road. Originally built in the 13th century, the church was all but rebuilt in 1868. Two past residents of Woodmancote, Thomas Harland and John Oswald, were amongst the Protestant Martyrs burnt at the stake in Lewes in the Marian Persecutions of 1556. There are a number of old houses in the parish, as well as some of more recent date, including one designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The parish contains one public house, the Wheatsheaf, which stands on the Albourne Road, near to the turning to Twineham.
