NEARBY ATTRACTION: Worthing near South Downs Way Worthing West Sussex
Worthing, West Sussex, England, Tel: 44(0) email:

Worthing is located in West Sussex on the South Coast of England, and it is just 3 miles as the crow flies from the outskirts of Worthing to the South Downs Way - justifiably an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Worthing owes its development to the popularity of sea bathing and it s connection with royalty. In 1798 King George III sent his daughter Princess Amelia for health reasons. The small fishing hamlet quickly grew in to a favourite seaside resort for the royal, the rich and the fashionable. From famous Royals to famous poets and recent stars, Worthing has seen them all, and many have chosen Worthing as their home. Oscar Wilde found it such a charming town that he spent the summer and autumn of 1894 here writing The Importance of Being Ernest in the mornings and playing with his family on the beach in the afternoons. The Pier has survived being blown down, burnt out and blown up in its 140 year history. It now stands proudly at the centre of our coast line where fisherman sell fresh catches from their boats and the promenade gives views for miles. You will be impressed with the palm trees along the promenade giving a Mediterranean feel as you stroll along the five miles of flat seafront. Here the traditional seaside with deck chairs, buckets and spades and fish and chips meet with the entrepreneurial town centre. Whilst Worthing has not forgotten its past, particularly along the sea front, it certainly has not got left behind. The West End, with new landscaping and street furniture, is established as the Restaurant Quarter of the town, and the Café Society sees the streets alive with pavement cafes and tea rooms. Worthing is one of the sunniest resorts in the country with the beautiful back drop of the South Downs. Worthing also offers entertainment to suit all tastes, fabulous shopping opportunities and many attractions for you to enjoy. Must see and do.......Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, Highdown Chalk Gardens, High Salvington Windmill, English Martyrs Church (Sistene Chapel), Highdown Hill, South Downs, Brooklands Pleasure Park. - The 100 mile (161 kilometre) long South Downs Way follows the old routes and droveways of ancient man along the chalk escarpment and ridges of the South Downs. The route provides the visitor with the opportunity "to get away from it all" without having to travel too far in this busy part of England. The undulating route provides a wonderful trip for long distance riders as well as walkers. With Worthing being so close to the South Downs Way and having an abundance of accommodation providers from luxury hotels to small and comfortable BandB's, it is ideal as a stop over, or as a base for providing interesting day trips and short breaks.
